If there’s any vehicle in the Mercedes-Benz lineup that can
be described as the automaker’s bread-and-butter, it is the E-Class. Now in its
ninth generation with more than 10 million vehicles produced over more than
half a century, the E-Class is the soul of the modern lineup. For 2011, four
sedan models are offered: the E350 and E550, E63 AMG and the new E350 Blue TEC
clean diesel model. On sale in all 50 states, the E350 Blue TEC is powered by a
3.0-liter, V-6 diesel engine producing 210 horsepower and 400 lb.-ft. of
torque, which is capable of 30 percent better fuel economy than a comparable
gasoline engine.

As with the C-Class, there are two trim levels for the E,
Sport and Luxury. The former are fitted with stiffer dampers and springs, lower
ride height and are distinguished by a three-rib grille and three-spoke
steering wheel. Comfort suspension, a four-rib grille and four-spoke steering
wheel identify the Luxury models. While the exterior styling is a combination
of modern aesthetic and visual cues from the “Pontoon Mercedes” of the 1950s.
The E-Class sedans wear the three-pointed star on the hood above the front
grille. All those lines and details are visually catching, but slippery through
the wind, thanks to the low 0.27 co-efficient of drag, which leads to better
fuel economy and less wind noise at highway speed.

Safety innovations have long been a part of Mercedes-Benz’s
engineering ethic. This year, the E-Class features even more ground-breaking
technologies, including Active Lane Keeping Assist, which lets the driver know
if they’ve strayed by simulating rumble strip vibration in the steering wheel.
It’s part of DISTRONIC PLUS and operates at speeds above 37 mph. A small camera
in the windshield is coupled to a computer that analyzes the images to
recognize lane markings. Working with stability control, it can steer the
vehicle back in line by applying one of the rear wheel brakes. The optional
DISTRONIC PLUS also features Active Blind Spot Assist, which uses sensors to
monitors the areas behind and to the side of the vehicle. When a turn signal is
activated and the system senses a vehicle in the blind spot, it produces visual
and audible warnings. As with Active Lane Keeping Assist, the system is capable
of steering the vehicle away from potential danger. In addition to these
systems, the E-Class features many more safety technologies, along with 11
airbags.

In addition to the turbodiesel-powered E350 Blue Tec, the
E-Class Sedan and Wagon feature three gasoline engines. A 3.5-liter, V-6 engine
producing 268 horsepower and 258 lb.-ft. of torque powers the E350, while a
5.5-liter, V-8 engine developing 382 horsepower and 391 lb.-ft. of torque
propels the E550. Both are available with 4MATIC all-wheel drive. The E63 AMG
is powered by a 6.3-liter, V-8 engine producing 518 horsepower and 465 lb.-ft.
of torque and is mated to a seven-speed MCT automatic transmission. It is the
first engine developed entirely by AMG is among the most powerful naturally
aspirated production V-8s.
